Palm Sunday Children's Sermon Year A*

Sunday, March 20, 2005

The Rev. Peter Faass, Rector

St. John the Baptist, Sanbornville

Matthew 21: 1-11; Is. 45:21-25; Ps. 22:1-21; Phil. 2:5-11; Matthew 26:36- 27:66

In the Name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

•What is Palm Sunday? Why do we wave palm branches and shout Hosanna? What does hosanna mean? (Heb. "Pray, save us.) A cry of praise and adoration to God ( to the Messiah).

•Why were the crowds of people so happy to see Jesus ride into Jerusalem on a donkey? Why did they spread their cloaks in the road before Jesus, wave palm branches and shout Hosanna?

•Did the mood in Jerusalem stay joyful? What happened to Jesus later that week? Did the people who adored him and shouted hosanna on Palm Sunday expect this to happen? Did Jesus know what would happen to him?

•Why then did he do this: enter Jerusalem, knowing what was going to happen to him?

•He could have had it all! Power, wealth, kingdoms. Satan offered him those very things when he began his ministry. (Temptation in the dessert.) Why did he ride to his crucifixion and death?

•LOVE (For us, for you and me. To save us from our sins and to give us eternal life.) As Paul says in today's letter to the Philipians, " Though [Jesus ] was in the form of God . . . he emptied himself, taking the form of a servant . . . and being found in human form . . . he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross." It was all about LOVE for you and me.

•A song by the C & W singer, Randy Travis, that I heard expresses this theology beautifully. Song title is ABOVE ALL

•Play music. 10:30 Service: Hand out lyrics. Sing together.)

•"You took the fall, and thought of me, above all."

AMEN!

Above All sung by Randy Travis

Above all powers

Above all kings

Above all nations and all created things

Above all wisdom and all the ways of man

You were here before the world began.

Above all kingdoms

Above all thrones

Above all wonders this world has ever known

Above all wealth and treasures of the earth

There's no way to measure what you're worth.

Crucified , laid behind a stone.

You lived to die, rejected and alone.

Like a rose trampled on the ground.

You took the fall, and thought of me, above all.

Above all powers

Above all kings

Above all nations and all created things.

Above all wisdom and all the ways of man

You were here before the world began

Above all kingdoms

Above all thrones

Above all wonders this world has ever known

Above all wealth and treasures of the earth

There's no way to measure what you're worth

Crucified , laid behind a stone.

You lived to die, rejected and alone.

Like a rose trampled on the ground.

You took the fall, and thought of me, above all.

Crucified , laid behind a stone.

You lived to die, rejected and alone.

Like a rose trampled on the ground.

You took the fall, and thought of me, above all.

Like a rose trampled on the ground.

You took the fall, and thought of me, above all.
